Girls Can Do Anything Even Be Pirates! The Story of Mary Read the Pirate edition by Terry Hueffed Children eBooks Reviews
This is the story of a truly amazing woman Mary Read. It is a fast flowing story with lots of facts and interesting events. Already as a child Mary was told by her mum to pretend to be a boy. Her mum had good reasons for this decision, reasons which I won't give away, except to say that I found it very amusing to read how they even managed to fool Mary's grandmother. If you are looking for a truly emancipated woman living in the early 1700's, look no further. Mary Read, alias Mark Read, it is. As the book's title indicates, Mary became a pirate. The part of the book that deals with these events could perhaps be a bit stronger. To me, sentences like the following didn't sound entirely convincing the pirate captain said that his crew never had to kill anyone; or a pirate's life is a good life. But this is a minor aspect which I decided will not influence my assessment of this jewel of a story. The key messages of this entertaining book are women are as capable as men, and follow your dreams. Look at our society today. Most CEOs and managers are men. In 1700 most pirates were men. In a way, not a lot has changed. If 300 years ago a woman could be a pirate, not just a pirate, but a very accomplished pirate, then I can't see indeed why women today can't be whatever men can be. Terry, you wrote a superb book with an impressive ending. 5 stars from me.
