I was asked by the author if I wanted to read his latest work, this one, and I agreed. I don't know Mr. Ness, but because I had read the original story, D.E.M.: Deus Ex Machina, I decided to read this one as well. I was not disappointed. Like the original book, this is a "techno thriller". And because it is the second in a series of two (there is no indication that there will be more books in the "D.E.M." series...), you could call it a sequel, or perhaps "the concluding chapter..". For those who have not read the original book, this one will start in a sort of "head-scratching" manner....I hate reviews that give too much away, so there will be no spoilers here.!! On the other hand, you need to know something about this book, so... For those who have read the first book, this one picks up where the first one stopped. The characters are fully developed (for the most part..) and the action starts immediately. Like the first book, this one centers around espionage and then moves forward to encompass a very interesting conspiracy plot. If you have read some of the Dan Brown stuff like "The DaVinci Code" or maybe the more recent "Inferno", you will understand when I say that Lee Ness takes you on a scavenger hunt in this book. The underlying tenets are fiction of course, but still, .... it creates tension and keeps you wondering (and thinking..).
One of the best parts of the first book is the character dialogue. And this one is much the same. Dialogue is one of Ness' strong suits. The story flows well and it is easy to become absorbed in the characters. There is little to dislike here in the way the story progresses. The four main characters, Rachel, Cam, Dave, and Deb who were so abruptly left in the first book, are picked up again here and moved forward into an insidious inner circle of spycraft and espionage. The plot development moves quickly, leaving our characters scrambling about and trying to catch up as the opposing elements play off against each other. Our little group is cast into the fray against their wishes and is forced to take part in a rapidly developing race across Europe. They deploy some amazing technology assets and with the help of a governmental "handler", are tasked with stopping three major political and geographical adversaries (really four if you count the Brits who are behind our group's effort...) in their quest to obtain documents and maps that could change the political climate of the entire world. The dirty underbelly of governments is exposed, and the relentless push by terrorist organizations to gain control and to dominate opposing thought is shown here for what it is.... all in the name of a fictional account of course.!!
This book moves along and provides a satisfying amount of each character as they struggle against the odds. Our characters remain true to form but are completely fooled at one point late in the book when a supposed supporting element abruptly turns against them. In the end, the story comes to a very satisfactory conclusion that seems to tie up most of the loose ends. Unlike the first book, this one seems to put this story to rest.
So, once again, I like the story. I like the characters. And I like the dialogue. The story progresses well and has no real dead space. Having said that, the editing and the proofing could use some improvement. There are enough errors to be noticeable, although they didn't really detract much from my enjoyment of reading. There is a lot of coarse language in this book, just like in the first one. I think some of it could have been handled a little better. Using more appropriate euphemisms in place of some of the F-bombs would have toned down the coarseness with no deleterious effect on the story.
Overall, a good story and a satisfactory conclusion to a two book series. Good story resolution. Four stars for another enjoyable read. If you read the first book before this one, you will enjoy this resolution to the story. Recommended.

Rachel and her friends, Cam, Deborah, and David are on the run, being pursued by a person or persons unknown. All they know is that if they don’t run, they will die. They’re finally cornered and given a stark choice, accept a dangerous mission or die. If they accept the mission, they will be given their freedom, a kind of quid pro quo, but in order to prevail they must overcome the shadows of their own pasts.
D.E.M.- Quid Pro Quo by Lee Ness picks up where book one leave off, and continues the amazing adventures of a team of experts who have to rely on their wits and individual skill to fight against the power of governments and potent organizations. Tight writing, profound character development, and excellent pacing mark this second in the Deus ex Machina series. A definite recommended read for thriller lovers that hooks you from page one and hangs you out limp and spent by the end.

Action from the get go, sadly there is not much story/plot in the first seven chapters of this book, second in the series. With NO synopsis at the beginning or character introduction, readers who have not read the first book will be completely lost!
Dave, Debs, Rachel and Cam are all sat in a hotel room after the rescue of Rachel. Are they safe? No! Debs, operational team member, used to being on her own, is now responsible for three others. Can she delay the men chasing them long enough for the other to get to the BMW? Who is coming after them? Debs, a bi-sexual, has not given up on Rachel but Rachel is still involved with Cam. Will their plan to lead the hunters to them and attack work? No! Who is Mr. Brown? He wants the four of them to work for him. Their other option? Death! What do the Piri Reis map, Visigoth bishops and Rohonc Codex all have in common?
How is Rachel connected with the Israelis? What do her now deceased parents have to do with it all? The real story starts in earnest in Chapter 20 when Rachel and Cam start working together like in the first book. Abdul Qahhar (Hezbollah) recognizes Deb? Why/How? Debs history comes out in Chapter 25. Connecting the dots it is a small world. The team manage to prevent Ben's (Mossad) team from executing Hezbollah members on UK soil but Cam is kidnapped by the Mossad. Can Debs beat the others to the Rohonc Codex? What is Room 39? How does this news affect Dave?
If you like a book with plenty of violence and coarse conversation with plenty of "F" words scattered throughout then this might be for you. There are NO sex scenes but lots of innuendo. The story is wrapped up at the end so the reader is not left hanging.
This book needs a brief overview at the beginning along with a character summary. The first few chapters need to be cut and made into one chapter. As for editing errors, there are way too many for this being a second book. A good editor would/should have caught many of them. There is a linked index which is great for accessing the chapter you want. I agreed to read and review this book in exchange for an honest review. I removed one star for poor introduction and beginning content and one star for poor editing. I debated on 2 or 3 stars settling with 3, as I need to push some of my personal views aside when reviewing a book and even if I don't enjoy a book, realize that others might. Thanks, Liz
